Locomotion

A thematic MOVI format about moving through space, support and the body’s capacity to adapt.

2027 February 1 - March 22

Locomotion is a MOVI themed format in which we explore human movement through space: from floorwork and transitions to support, balance, jumping, crawling, running, climbing and creatively connecting movement.

This direction develops the body’s ability to change levels, directions, rhythm and points of support while maintaining clarity, sensitivity and play.

The format can be organised as a 6–8 week process, a workshop or an intensive weekend event. Dates, price and registration will be announced once the format is scheduled.

WHAT WE WILL EXPLORE

Moving through space

  1. We will learn to travel through space by changing direction, height, speed and rhythm. We will explore principles of walking, running, jumping, crawling and floorwork that expand the movement vocabulary.

Support and transitions

  1. We will work with the hands, feet, knees, hips and spine as points of support. We will look for efficient ways to rise, descend, transfer weight and move safely between different body levels.

Adaptability and play

We will create situations in which the body must respond, adapt and discover a solution. Technique matters, as does the ability to learn, play, communicate and remain alive in movement.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN AND GAIN?

  • A broader locomotion vocabulary: walking, crawling, floorwork, jumps, transitions and support.

  • Better balance, spatial awareness and the ability to change direction and level.

  • More confidence moving close to the ground, rising, descending and transferring weight.

  • A clearer connection between the feet, hands, spine, pelvis and gaze.

  • Coordination, rhythm, responsiveness and the creative linking of movement into sequences.

  • Practical principles that can be applied in daily life, sport, dance or personal movement practice.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This format is for people who want to expand their movement vocabulary, deepen coordination and learn to move more freely through space. Experience helps, but curiosity, openness to learning and readiness to work with the body at different levels matter most. The load can be adapted, yet the process is active and calls for attentive participation.

WHY LOCOMOTION?

  • One of MOVI’s most practical directions: movement in which the body learns to travel, respond and adapt.

  • Locomotion brings together athleticism, coordination, floorwork, balance and creativity.

  • The practice focuses on principles that allow movement to be created in different situations, rather than on isolated tricks.

  • The work unfolds through clear tasks, partnership, play and reflection.

  • The format helps the body become more mobile, courageous and prepared for everyday and creative scenarios.

  • It can be a continuation after Movement Foundations or a separate in-depth thematic exploration of moving through space.

PRACTICAL LOCOMOTION MAPS

1

Floorwork and transitions: from lying, sitting and crawling to standing. We will explore how the body changes levels without unnecessary tension.

2

Support and weight transfer: hands, feet, knees, hips and spine as living points of support. We will learn stability that remains available in movement.

3

Direction, rhythm and spatial awareness: moving forwards, backwards, sideways and in spirals, at different tempos and through unexpected transitions.

4

Jumps, landings and response: safely receiving force, elasticity, rapid adaptation and a playful bodily response.

5

Movement sequences and improvisation: linking separate locomotion principles into a living, creative and individually adaptable practice.
